A Food Hall and a Tax Increase oh my!

A few years ago I visited Houston, TX, and had my first food hall experience. Since then I’ve been wondering if/when we would get something like that here in Charleston. Well, the time is coming with Gather Mount Pleasant.

From the same people that have Gather Greenville, the Mount Pleasant location is going to be similar, yet larger.  Here’s a breakdown of the 5.5 acre, $14m development according to the layout found HERE:

  • 12 food and beverage spots

  • 6 retail spots

  • 5 dining areas (4 seated, 1 standing)

  • 4 offices

  • 3 meeting rooms

  • 2 lawns

  • 1 stage

The original plans included a hotel component as well, but that has since changed. To stay up to date on this, check out their website or follow them on Instagram.

Gather will be located directly next to the Midtown Townhome neighborhood off Hungry Neck Blvd, and in emails to town council, there is both opposition and support for the project.  Here is what some neighbors had to say:

SUPPORT:

“I’m writing to state I’m in favor of the Midtown -Gather project. I live in the Midtown single homes section, we have two small children, and are very much part of this community, and plan to reside in the area for years to come."

"I know there has been a lot of opposition to this new mixed-use development, however, after careful consideration, I am in favor of this new and exciting addition to our growing neighborhood."

“I wanted to write to express my support of this proposed project in the Midtown neighborhood. I am a home owner in one of the single family home sections and see this addition as positive for both our neighborhood and the community."

OPPOSITION:

"The obvious quality of life issues that would accompany such a schedule are apparent. Business starting at 8am and ceasing at 10pm, is completely at odds with family residences where children and adults are retiring early in order to be up early for jobs and school."

"Also, dogs are allowed in the Gather Greenville which means that they will be barking and disrupting the peace and quiet of our community. In addition, no one would be present to enforce cleanup of their excrement."

“issues such as parking, cleanup, constant traffic and noise issues, and many other topics which will have significant impact affecting the quality of life within our residential community and the value of our homes."
