Hi, It’s Bill.

Lots of great info for you this week from pumpkin patches to ghosts to the return of Sean Brock to Charleston. Here are some news articles and blogs from around the Lowcountry, including a public engagement platform to allow citizens to comment on city projects and voice their opinions and concerns.

What I’ve been reading up on this week:

  • Have higher mortgage rates reversed housing demand? (via HousingWire)

  • Consumer Housing Trends Report 2024 (via Zillow)

Brock is Back with Burgers! 🍔

For those who don’t know, let’s start with a quick Sean Brock history lesson:

  • Brock was the executive chef of Husk from it’s opening in 2010-2018

  • His other Charleston restaurants included McCrady’s & Minero

  • During his time in Charleston he also opened restaurants in Atlanta, Greenville,

    Savannah & Nashville

  • In 2019 Brock announced his departure from the Neighborhood Dining Group

restaurants in Charleston to focus on his Nashville Restaurants

Awards

  • In 2010 he won the James Beard award for Best Chef Southeast

  • In 2011 Bon Apetit magazine named Husk “Best New Restaurant in America”

Television

  • Sean has been on numerous TV shows including Iron Chef America, The Mind of a Chef

  • And Chef’s Table

  • He might be most remembered for his appearance on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

  • He took Anthony to his first waffle house experience here in Charleston

Fast forward to 2024

Joyland, one of the Nashville restaurants he left Charleston to focus on, is coming to town

  • It will be located at the old Hero’s Donuts at 145 Calhoun Street

  • I was personally unfamiliar with Joyland until reading this

  • The concept is an ode to old-school fast-food joints

  • The menu (pictured below) is everything you’d expect

  • Burgers, hotdogs, shakes (with or without booze), and even breakfast fare

  • Their signature item is something they call a crustburger

  • It’s an ultra smashed smashburger that’s then smashed WITH the bun

  • (so much so the bun then looks like pancakes)

I’m also intrigued by their chicken-on-a-stick items

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to try it.  I’m ALWAYS down for a good burger.

Should I do an article on the best burgers in town?  Now I’m getting hungry.  If I made a best burger, reply to this email and tell me where your favorite place in Charleston is for a burger.
