Charleston’s Juvenile Curfew

Introduction
A new nighttime curfew for minors will take effect in Charleston’s central business district this summer.

Curfew Hours
Anyone 17 or younger must be with an adult between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily during summer.

Areas Affected
The curfew covers parts of King Street, Broad Street, East Bay, and Market Street.

Reason for Curfew
Officials say the policy aims to curb underage crime in the King Street area.

Incident Data
City leaders report at least 40 late-night incidents involving minors since January.

Community Concerns
Some advocates warn curfews can lead to unnecessary interactions with police.

Allowed Exceptions
Minors may be out if they’re with a guardian, working, in an emergency, at a sponsored event, or exercising free-speech rights.

Seasonal Adjustment
After summer, the curfew will apply only Thursday through Sunday.
