My exclusive 1-on-1 with Mayor Cogswell
This week I had the honor to sit down with Mayor Cogswell to discuss the future of Charleston. The full, uncut interview will be featured on my YouTube channel, but I wanted to give you, my loyal ChuckTown Report readers, the first look at our conversation.
During the interview, we covered 5 main topics/issues as outlined below. Enjoy!
1. Growth and Affordability
Charleston’s population has more than doubled, driving up living costs and putting pressure on housing availability.
The city is working to add 3,500 affordable housing units by 2030, with 1,000 already in development.
Housing initiatives focus on transit-friendly and mixed-income areas, especially in West Ashley, to keep Charleston accessible for families.
2. Flooding and Development
Flooding impacts the entire Lowcountry, and overdevelopment has only added to the problem.
Cogswell’s strategy includes dividing Charleston into drainage basins and educating the community on flood prevention.
A “basin flood action plan” is underway, pairing strict stormwater regulations with targeted projects to improve drainage.
3. Community-Focused Projects
While large developments get attention, Cogswell is focused on smaller projects that enhance livability.
Plans are underway for a new West Ashley pedestrian bridge and improved multi-use paths to make the area more accessible.
Key entry points, like the Ashley River Bridge, are being beautified to make Charleston’s gateways more welcoming.
4. Infrastructure for Growth
Infrastructure improvements are crucial, especially in fast-growing areas like Johns Island and Daniel Island.
Cogswell acknowledges the infrastructure gap and supports regional collaboration to address road and transportation challenges.
Specific projects on Johns Island and the Cainhoy peninsula aim to keep up with rapid growth and provide better connectivity.
5. Community Engagement
Cogswell believes in the power of connecting with residents to address issues head-on.
Monthly “Coffee with the Mayor” events give him a chance to meet residents across the city and hear their concerns.
These gatherings are promoted on the city’s website, newsletter, and social media, reinforcing his commitment to accessibility and transparency.
This was an incredible experience and opportunity that never would have happened without you, my readers, and the thousands that follow me on Instagram to spread the word on area projects and developments there. I can’t wait to share the full video with you. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to be one of the first to watch it.
