An Inside Look at The Cooper

This week I was given a hardhat tour of The Cooper, the new waterfront hotel between Fleet Landing and Waterfront Park and only one word comes to mind…WOW!

I want to put aside any thoughts of “we have enough hotels” and just look at this for what it is and provide my insights from what I saw and heard and focus not so much on the hotel aspect of the project, but everything else.

The quick and dirty of the hotel is that it has 119 rooms and will have a very bed-and-breakfast-type feel. When checking in, instead of going to a desk, your point of contact will meet you to check you in and/or escort you to your room and do the check-in process there.

From what I learned however, is that it is so much more than just a hotel and will offer benefits for locals and non-hotel guests. While the pool, pool bar, fitness center and 3 private boats will be exclusively for hotel guests, the rest is designed to benefit the public.

Four Restaurants with harbor views open to the public:

  • The main restaurant (name yet to be released) is on the main floor, which is the second floor. A large space with open kitchen off the lobby/lounge area.

  • A cafe serving quick bites and wine on the ground level accessible from inside and outside.

  • A burger restaurant on the waterfront park side of the ground level.

  • A rooftop Mediterranean restaurant with nearly 360º views of the harbor and Charleston

More public space comes about on the front lawn. The grassy area will be open for hanging out or lounging, yet will also be available for events. Then along the water will be a walking path coming from waterfront park and eventually could connect to Union Pier when that project is finished.

For the event spaces, there are two ballrooms, with the grand ballroom having a capacity for 500 standing or 350 seated.

So love it or hate it for being a hotel, I think they are doing a great job of making spaces accessible to non-hotel guests to be able to enjoy the waterfront. Yet because it’s a hotel, it is a very polarizing development on the peninsula.

And don’t worry…Fleet Landing isn’t going anywhere! They’ve worked out a deal for them to stay!
