Flights and Fights!
5 new non-stop flights from Charleston International and 1 fight over what to do with a premier piece of land in downtown Summerville.
Get outta here!
First, AirCanada announced that they are bringing back their non-stop flight from Charleston to Toronto for a second season of flights. The first season saw 20,000 passengers on 400 flights.
With Toronto being a big international hub, projections estimated more connections to London and Europe. To their surprise, the top connecting destinations were:
Greece
Japan
Italy
Denmark
Spain
So while you may not be able to get to many international destinations non-stop from Charleston, now you can have a solid array with a quick flight to Toronto before jetsetting across the globe.
Also, Breeze Airways has announced 4 new nonstop flights from Charleston this year and the days they will fly:
Rochester, NY - Thursdays & Sundays starting May 8th
Albany, NY - Mondays & Fridays starting June 13th
Burlington, VT - Mondays & Fridays (summer seasonal)
New Haven, CT - Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays & Fridays starting now
Historic Preservation vs New Development
The 5.3-acre redevelopment project at 500 North Main Street in Summerville is stalled due to a conflict between the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) and the developers.
The BAR is focused on preserving the historic hospital building, while developers want to balance that with economic goals and site functionality
The BAR objects to demolishing the hospital wings, while the developers say they need to remove them for site circulation
The site is zoned for downtown mixed-use (DMX), which encourages development that may conflict with preservation goals
Developers presented three main design options with sub-options on January 30th, but none were approved by the BAR due to concerns about the historic hospital. The BAR is asking for documentation about other options considered and wants to see more effort put into saving the wings of the hospital from demolition. Options presented that were denied were:
Retail focused on Main Street or an internal plaza
Buildings angled towards a central plaza
A single large retail building with more public space
Possible Solutions Include:
Relocating the hospital building, though its feasibility is questioned
Town Council reevaluating zoning and historic status
The BAR may also consider nominating the building to the national register
The project has been ongoing for years without approval, and the deadline for the BAR to approve plans has been extended to June 30th

An Announcement From Bill
As always, thank you for reading. It amazes me every week how many of you read this little thing I’ve put together. I love this city and the Lowcountry, and while it’s growing at a rapid rate, it’s hard to keep up with what’s going on, so I really hope I’m helping you keep up, I know I’m having a hard time keeping up some days. I told you I would promise to keep bringing you information and I have an announcement to make. I’ve decided to start a podcast all about Charleston. But instead of me just rambling on and on, each week I will invite a city leader, person of influence, and more to discuss what they’re doing and how they are thoughtfully moving our city forward while preserving the past. BUT I need your input. Who should I reach out to? Think elected officials, leaders of non-profit organizations, CEOs, Developers, and news/media personalities. The possibilities are endless, but I want to know who YOU want to hear from. Just reply to this email and give me a name. I really appreciate it and I’ll see you over on Instagram and again right here next week
