Historic Mosquito Beach Revitalization
Work is progressing to restore significant historical buildings at Mosquito Beach, preserving a vital piece of African American history and culture in the Lowcountry.
I. The Project: Bringing History Back to Life
The project focuses on the rehabilitation of the historic Pine Tree Hotel and the adjacent Skeeta Beach Lounge.
The aim is to return both the hotel and the restaurant to operational capacity.
This effort seeks to share the history of Mosquito Beach and celebrate Gullah Geechee foodways, history, and culture.
II. Key Organizations and Support
Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF) supports preservation efforts and acts as a Fiscal Sponsor for the Historical Mosquito Beach Foundation.
A significant $1.25 million grant from the Mellon Foundation is supporting the rehabilitation.
The project team is led by William "Cubbie" Wilder, a descendant of the original owners.
III. The Historical Significance of Mosquito Beach
Built in the early 1960s by the Wilder family, these properties were vital gathering spaces during the Jim Crow era.
African American citizens were prohibited from visiting Charleston’s segregated beaches at that time.
Mosquito Beach remained an important landmark for the African American and Gullah Geechee community even after segregation ended.
IV. Journey Towards Restoration
Preservation efforts have been underway for many years, resulting in the Mosquito Beach Historic District being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The buildings have faced challenges from social and economic changes and numerous hurricanes.
Previous grants from the National Park Service and FEMA helped stabilize both properties.
V. Looking Ahead: Goals for the Future
The primary goal is to revitalize both properties as an operating hotel, Gullah Geechee market, and restaurant.
This will help draw visitors to learn and share the history and vibrant Gullah Geechee culture.
Historic Charleston Foundation is proud to support the community in revitalizing this historic area and amplifying its rich history.

It’s my favorite holiday weekend!
Today is the Kentucky Derby, and tomorrow is one of my favorite holidays…STAR WARS Day. I’ll be the first to admit it, I’m a huge nerd! 🤓 I love Star Wars, Lego & Video Games. In honor of Star Wars Day, be sure to head over to my Instagram on Sunday for a special Star Wars/Charleston collaboration post. Just a little something fun and lighthearted for the holiday. So this weekend, break out the lightsabers and the bourbon, two of my favorite things!
Are you a Star Wars fan?
Thanks for reading, and May The 4th Be With You!
